A GUIDE TO

ALLOTMENT COMPOSTING

Mature Compost is one of the best materials for feeding the soil and will increase both structure and fertility.

WHAT IS COMPOST?

Compost is organic products broken down, by heat, fungi, bacteria and animals.

Nearly all plant waste, grass cuttings but not too much at any one time. Pet bedding from rabbits, guinea pigs and hens, news papers that have been torn into strips. Farm manure’s especially horse.

What should I not compost?

Cooked food which will encourage rats, animal waste from cats and dogs, thick woody branches, perennial weeds, diseased plant matter and seed heads from weeds.

How do I build a compost bin?

Recycled pallets make an excellent compost bin although there are ready made bins available.

What size should it be?

A good guide line is the bigger the better, this way the greater amount of heat produced the quicker it will break down. A minimum size around 1 square mitre.

How many do I need?

It recommended that you have 3 compost bins. No.1 filling up, no. 2 rotting down and the last one in use.

Do I need add an activator?

You can use products like Garroto, or keep organic by using Comfrey, Organic poultry manure, dried blood, nettles, seaweed or horse manure.
