Elstree Gardens |

Phase one - Wednesday 25th May
After the success at Cray Road, volunteers from allotments around Bexley have turned their attention to Elstree Gardens. This small site, just five full plots, has been closed for some time and the brambles were steadily advancing.
The call went out for volunteers and was answered with enthusiasm (despite the rain) and a sturdy, determined band joined Jan from the Bexley Allotments Help Desk to start the clearance work.
Thanks to: Jan, Vic, Bob, Eddie, Derrick, Brian, Sylvia, Bill,Tony, Sue and Joan.

Rosemary Road
In order to promote recycling and help keep the site tidier, we have created a 'Reuse Area'. It's proved very popular and nothing stays in the area for very long. |

Warwick Road - A cautionary tale
Most sites have reported an increase in fox activity this year but here is an unusual case of snatch and grab.
A plotholder looked up from her weeding just in time to see a fox jump out of her car window with her wallet in it's mouth!
Beware the urban fox! |

Sherwood Park - Open Day
Despite the weather - 2 to 3 inches of snow! - we had a successful open Day. Many plotholders attended and surprisingly at least 6 plots were reserved and several others have been taken since so that about 10 have been taken in all.
Most seem to be very enthusiastic and have got stuck in to get thing moving straight away. very heartening as other enquiries have also been received.

Church Road
Thursday 24th April,2008 children from the Foundation Stage Unit at the local Primary School were welcomed on site to plant potatoes for the United Nations Year of the Potato. They were all given a seed potato to plant in prepared ground.
They came well equipped with a colourful array of wellies! Although everybody was excited they were well behaved and well-supervised. They placed the potatoes in the trenches with care and enthusiasm.
The allotment site has adopted the school and constantly advises them on growing. This proved so successful last year and assisted the school in Promoting Healthy Eating. This year they have been able to plant potatoes in a wider area instead of growing them in tubs at the school.
We look forward to welcoming them back in the coming weeks to watch their crops flourish. Finally, they will be dug up, taken back to school and cooked, served and, hopefully, enjoyed by all. |

March 2008 - The Potato Game
When three and four year olds from our local nursery visited to plant potatoes, we made a game of it.
Put the appropriate number of raffles tickets, one per child, into a hat and let them pick one each. Give each child a peg and help put their name and raffle number on it. Let them find the number on the chart (they can be written on at random).
Explain to the children that that is where they will plant their two potatoes on the allotment garden. Put a string along each potato row so they can place their peg on it at the appropriate place to mark where their potatoes are planted.
We look forward to seeing them back later in the year to harvest their crop. |
